Lily’s World

 

Lily's World is a story-based game through Bloxels about a little girl (Lily) trying to find her cat (Henry). Because she is a little girl, she also has an overactive imagination which makes different locations of her house look like these crazy levels. She'll have to face many enemies such as bugs, ghosts, creepy eyes, and more! She gets closer to finding Henry at each level, seeing him at the end of Level 5. I tried to make this game cute so that anyone could play it; however, I wanted to make it a "rage quit" game, making these levels very hard despite how cute and "easy" it looks. It gets a bit confusing at times, which can frustrate people, but that is the point of my game; I did not intend to make it easy.

The Making of Lily’s World

  • Creating The Characters

    I started by making a 13x13 pixel canvas on procreate to create my characters. The first character I made was the protagonist (Lily), and the rest of the characters came afterwards. Next, I grouped the characters by level, trying to make the characters look alike or fit in a theme depending on the level.

  • Making The Characters On Bloxels

    When making the characters on Bloxels, multiple frames are available to create an animation. These characters/ blocks will then be able to have unique movements during the game.

  • Building The Levels

    When building the levels, there are different coloured blocks, each with individual actions, such as Green (Terrain), Blue (Water), Red (Hazard), Yellow (Coins/Keys), Purple (Enemies), Pink (Power Up), Orange (Moveable Blocks/ Explosives), and White (Speech/ Checkpoint). I tried to make these levels cohesive and increasingly challenging when building them. Each level gets longer, and players must look for clues given from speech signs to beat them. I added multiple speech signs throughout the games to provide the levels with a more story-based approach. When designing the game, it is also possible to change the background and the instrumental music; this gives each level its uniqueness.
